For Christ’s sake, John Jones: if you’re going to abuse the ‘I’ll fight and die for my right to measure in chains, bushels and hogsheads’ brigade, you need to do so with the panache and literacy that they lack. Not with the panache and literacy of a dim 12-year-old.
I am intrigued by reference in the chap’s rant to "2 Uk directors of the metre bureau."
What does this "metre bureau" do? Get together now and then to make sure the metre is still running smoothly? Consider ways of improving it? Making it a bit fatter in the middle, say, or giving it a little curve at the end? Making it available in a metallic sheen?
Isn’t it a shameful indictment of our honours system that the contibution of these two Brits continues to go unrewarded, while Mark Thatcher keeps his knighthood?
Few realise that Britain opted to go metric in the 1850s…
