Question for Americans

To Americans, or people of whatever nationality living in America – outside of lunatic right-wing blogs, do people in general give a monkey’s about the Dan Rather / dodgy letters story?

Given how incredibly unimportant and irrelevant the story is, it would be nice to hear that only ultra-partisan crazies care about it…

  1. Let’s see… A major network is presenting forgeries as evidence against the U.S. President two months before the election. It’s not relevant? WTF are you guys thinking? What if it was the other way around? Remember the Whitewater inverstigation during the Clinton years? Everyone was screaming "Vast Right Wing Conspiracy" and that was fucking boring – real estate deals for crissakes.

Doesn’t that support my point? Both Whitewater and Rathergate are nonsense scandals that only distract people from saner, real-life things…

  3. Because American voters ought to be concentrating on which of Bush and Kerry is the best person to lead their country, not on whose opponents or supporters have told the most outrageous lies lately.

If there were evidence that Kerry had forged the documents himself, or that he knew about it, that would rightly end his chances of becoming president – but I don’t think anyone on either side seriously believes that will happen. If he isn’t involved, the issue is irrelevant.

  4. And right as American voters are trying to concentrate on who is the best candidate a major media network is trying to influence the election by presenting forgeries.

I don’t think anyone is accusing Kerry or typing the memos himself, lol! Media bias isn’t relevant, though? Is that what you’re saying?

  5. C’mon John, exactly WHICH votes of Kerry’s 20 year senate carreer is Kerry talking about? None.

There is HUGE evidence that Kerry LIED, about Christmas in Cambodia, about his first Purple Heart — and therefore about running from Vietnam. But the Mainstream Media, after two years of Bush-hate anti-war junk publishing every rumor of Bush Lying (oops, not really), what IS the issue?

Peace AND Genocide (Kerry’s chosen Vietnam policy), or War against evil? That’s the issue. And yes, in war people die. So the pro-Saddam, pro-Al Qaeda, pro-Terrorists should surrender, stop fighting, stop killing; and then the Iraqi people can have democracy and peace and complaints about incompetent government (like the rest of the Democratic World). But what if the evil guys don’t WANT this peace, what if THEY are willing to fight, kill, and die?

You seem to support Genocide (to get peace).
    But you deny it.

  6. RW: even if they’d been real, the forgeries wouldn;t actually have added anything significant to existing knowledge about Bush’s service record, which isn’t a very important issue anyway (and wouldn’t have been pressed by anyone outside the extreme left if the vicious Swift Boatie attacks hadn’t left JFK vulnerable on the Vietnam front). It’s all teacup-storm-tacular.

TG: there’s no convincing evidence that Kerry lied about anything important re Vietnam, although it is possible that he (stupidly) shifted his February Cambodia mission to Christmas to make a better story. And the ratio of ‘Bush lied’ stories that exist to ‘Bush lied’ stories that have been published in the Mainstream Media is about 10:1 (just look at Medialens and Indymedia, and you’ll find a great many deranged anti-Bush conspiracy theories that the Mainstream Media rejected because they weren’t true). You’re also pushing the nonsense assertion that the postwar Vietnamese government was genocidal. It wasn’t.

  7. What do you know, CBS apologised.

    :-)

Charles, at LGF kicked their ass.

Yeah, yeah, teapots and tempests, right.

Here’s to the guys in pajamas! You fucking rock!

(john b, is it ok to say "fucking" on your blog? I got a potty mouth, I know ;-)

  8. Ah, it’s cos the link thing doesn’t support "target" at the moment as well as not supporting "title". Sorry. Will fix soonish, promise.

Well done debunkers, brickbats to Rather and Burgess. Although if this site were fark.com, I’d give the news an ‘obvious’ tag. It was particularly halfwitted of CBS to wait an extra six days to own up when the WaPo story last Tuesday (or was it Wednesday, I forget) was so conclusive.

The wait also doesn’t help the Kerry campaign any, which suggests that Making The Liberal Win isn’t one of CBS’s key priorities…

  9. Ah, ok, thanks for filling me in, I won’t use the target attribute until you fix it.

It was half-witted of CBS to wait all this time. How stupid was that? And many people, including the LGF Watch Kids, sneered at Charles but you gotta give the guy credit. He proved the documents were fake. So it’s really one for the blogosphere and one for Charles Johnson. Of course you’ve still got Kos who whines, whines, whines and I can’t stand whiners.

What you said though, about CBS’s priorities, it was arrogance that did them in. They never thought the "guys in pajamas" could take them down like that.

For the record, on our site we don’t wear pajamas. We blog naked.
