It would be wrong to blame to tar all Marxists with the same brush. But there are clear weaknesses in Marx’s ideas that helped create that situation. A perversion of Marxism it may have been but key weaknesses made it easier to exploit.

And yes, I think it is a bad thing that Marx won.
