Irritatingly, it was as a result of a media-driven scare campaign of exactly this sort that handguns were banned in the UK in the first place.

The point about the laws surrounding killing burglars isn't the actual text, or even the case law - it's the perception of that body of law. Thanks largely to the media, there are many people who believe they shouldn't confront burglars. That can't be good. There seem to be 2 options:

1) Change the law to make even more explicit that you can defend your home and property.
2) Publicise the existing law widely.

1) is an easier solution because our friends in the media are lazy and stupid.

There is a genuine civil liberties nasty in the Bill; they weaken the test from "intended to incite racial hatred" to "intended or likely to incite", at the same time as bringing in the religious. But this genuine problem isn’t about muslims, so obviously it gets less press.
