Stick it

I’m glad I’m getting out of Manchester. The useless wankers who run the council are so impressed by the Irish pub smoking ban that they’re planning on imposing one of their own.

Now, if Ken follows suit when I get down south, I’ll be *really* angry.

Incidentally, I think I’ve finally followed Damien and Dave in giving up on the halfwitted illiberal editorial line of the Guardian. OK, I do still buy it on Saturdays, but only for the Magazine, the Guide and the Review…

  1. Lucky you. I’m stuck here.

I remember that a few years back, Manchester used to have the highest rates of smoking, teenage pregnancy and alcohol consumption in the UK. I actually felt a tinge of local patriotism reading that.

‘Useless Wankers’ is a precise and nuanced description of the local authority, by the way.

  2. The article seems to suggest this move is not just coming from Manchester itself, but the entire connurbation of 3 million people. Are we to belive all 10 Greater Manchester Councils are in agreement on this, or that the Guardian have got it wrong about their former home.

Reminds me of the question: "How many premiership football teams have home grounds in Manchester?"

  3. Pat Karney’s organisation is a pan-GM one made up of people from across all the councils.

Presumably the plan is to draft identical legislation for all councils and then have individual votes on it – although I hope at least some fail. The comedy of watching people dodging across the border to Salford’s booming smoke-easys would be well worthwhile…
