More Kerry death throes

The doomed, McGovern-esque John Kerry campaign took another blow yesterday: a new WSJ/Harris poll (subscription required) shows Mr Kerry leading Mr Bush by 48% to 47% among likely voters.

With all this evidence accumulating to show that his campaign is practically dead, the only thing Mr Kerry can do now is honourably concede, pull out of the race, and retreat to a monastery.

  1. There’s details of the poll (and previous Harris/WSJ ones) available here without subscription.

Of course, with a tiny and statisically insignificant 51% of respondents saying they do not believe Bush should be re-elected, it’s obvious to me that Kerry should not only concede, but apologise for even daring to run against Bush and promise to disband the entire Democratic Party on grounds of extreme presumptuousness.

  2. The new Economist/YouGov poll (for all my ranting, I sometimes hypocritically download PDFs anyway) is broadly similar – GWB at 47 again (and his disapproval rating also at 51), but Kerry at 46.

(the Economist poll had fieldwork conducted in the middle of the Rathergate nonsense, showing that the rightwing meme about this being the Thing That Finishes Kerry is as deranged as it sounds).

  3. I think Kerry should sign Form 180, release Teresa’s Tax Forms, and THEN resign in favor of Edwards, who also (prolly) won’t win but at least will energize the base and be something positive instead of ABB.
